usb drive not disconnecting from the computer

K

krish na

dear friends,
my problem is that when once i plug in my usb drive or any hardwares (eg:
ipods), it starts fuctioning , but when i try to remove it from the computer,
the message "safe to remove hardware from the computer" appears , but the
device would not have been actually stopped working. so i am forced to remove
my hardwares even when the devices are working by which i fear that my
devices malfunction.

please solve my problem,
thank you.

Safe to remove hardware from the computer means that Vista is ready to
release hardware.

Not sure what you mean by "the device would not have been actually stopped
working". If you mean that the external USB drive is still spinning, that is
a function of the drives internal timer on how long a period of no activity
is allowed before the drive spins down. If that is not what you mean, please
explain.

You are not forced to do anything. If you choose you could leave the drive
connected until you shut down or want to remove it.

I think I know what he means. An example would be a thumb card. Normally
(pre Vista) when it is safe to remove device, the access light is off. But
for some reason in Vista, all my thumb drives access light stay on even
though it says safe to remove. I ignore it and remove them, but it is
different that it was pre Vista....

I agree Don. When Vista prompts that the hardware is safe to remove,
all software connected to the drive should be closed so that data
corruption does not occur. I'll have to dig into this issue a little
further and see if there's something else going on. In the meantime, if
our mods or other members have any suggestions, please feel free to
share your ideas.

The SanDisk instructions I got says to not remove while the LED is flashing,
and make sure all associate windows and files are closed before removing the
drive

Double click on the balloon that says 'safely remove hardware' and a
dialogue will open enabling you to shut down your USB device. It will then
say 'safe to remove hradware'

I can understand how it'd make you feel safer if the light was off.

But if Vista informs you that you can safely remove the device, then all
open file handles to the device have been closed, and there isn't any risk of
corruption.

When my ScanDisk thumb drive is transferring data the LED is flashing. When
NO data is transferring, the light is ON solid. The instructions that came
with it say to not try to remove the flash drive while the LED is flashing
(they mean blinking) and make sure all the applications are closed that are
accessing that drive.

Hi

I have a USB thumb drive. I wanted to transfer files from an XP machine to
my Vista laptop. I copied the files from the XP machine and everything was
fine. But then I could not stop the USB drive. I kept on getting the message
to try again later. There were no applications running but I still got the
same message. The machine was left like that for a couple of hours but the
same message showed up. Eventually the machine was turned off without
stopping the drive.

When I inserted the USB drive in the Vista laptop it is not recognized. It
was recognized previously (ie before the XP file transfer). What should I do
to get the Vista laptop to recognize the thumb drive?

Thanks

First reconnect it to the XP computer and see if it is recognized there and
what the state of the files are.
