usb doesn't work after SP4 installation

I have a usb-memory-device that worked wonderful with
win2000, until I installed SP4. The problem seems to be the
hole usb: The hardware-properties displays (with yellow
encircled exclamation mark), that the driver of the usb is
not installed (Code 28) and I could install the driver
again, but the installation everytimes failes. The solution
could be, that I need back my usb 1.0 driver, because my
laptop doesn't have usb 2.0 (How can I determine, which usb
I got?).

Thanks for any help, norm

Norm:

USB 1.1 vs 2.0 is a hardware distinction; the same drivers
support both technologies, depending whether your USB
controller(s) provide USB 1.1 ports, USB 2.0 ports, or
both. Your hardware will still only advertise itself as
USB 1.1-compliant, so the drivers will operate in "1.1
mode" (to oversimplify a little).

HOWEVER, I seem to be having the same problem as you are --
my entire USB subsystem fails after a period of time, and
every USB device attached to the system suddenly goes
dead. (Very annoying with a USB _mouse_. Not to mention
WiFi networking.) I can tell instantly when it's crapped
out (beyond the sudden loss of networking) because the
link light on my WiFi goes dead.

The machine I'm using is an old Toshiba 6230D with a
Pentium Pro 266 and Intel's 440FX chipset. The USB network
controller is a D-Link DWL-122 with the latest D-Link
drivers installed. I'm curious what your hardware
configuration is, and if there are any similiarities.

I'm also curious if you've noticed any particular
applications that seem to cause the problem. I've had it
happen a LOT while using the Avant Browser (latest
version), which may not be the browser's fault so much as
the fact that its tabbed-browsing feature tends to result
in me hitting the network (via USB) a _lot_ harder when
using it than any other time.

I just started working with this machine so I didn't
notice if SP4 _caused_ the problem, but given your info I
may reinstall Win2K from CD and _not_ upgrade to SP4, to
see if that fixes the problem. If I do, I'll post the
results here.
