USB disconnect/connect at random times

I have 8 USB connectors in use on my machine, and another two unused. Three
of them just have digital camera cables attached, because the geniuses that
designed the camera connectors couldn't decide on a single shape for the
terminals, but that's another story. The remaining cables are for two
printers, a scanner, the UPS and a memory card reader.
Just today, I've been getting the familiar "Connect / Disconnect" pair of
sounds (at irregular intervals (about 10-12 times during the course of the
entire day, but in three "clusters" of 3-4 events). I have no idea how to
figure out what is causing this, other than just disconnecting all the
devices one by one. Any ideas?
I'm assuming this is a USB problem, rather than some program that happens to
use the same tones.

Well, there is now a clue, of sorts. I got a pop-up this morning saying "The
USB Printing Support is a HI-SPEED USB device and will function at reduced
speed when plugged into a non-HI-SPEED port".
All of the USB support on this motherboard is USB 2.0. Is this different
from "HI-SPEED USB"?

Yes, USB 2.0 is the same as "high speed" (of course it can work in low speed
modes too)

Well, apparently there was a problem with the SM card reader. It was
connected but didn't have a card in it. I "safely removed" it, then
physically disconnected it. Since then there has been no problem. I still
don't understand why, after three years, Windows is suddenly complaining
about it.
