Disconnecting USB devices - very annoying problem

I've been having this problem since I can remember, even pre-sp1. The
usb ports disconnect randomly, at least I have not detected a pattern
for these disconnections.

I have:

Windows XP SP2
Gigabyte 8irxp motherboard
(4 x USB 2.0, 2 x USB 1.1) by cable and 2 x USB 1.1 onboard.
380Watts power source
P4 2.0 GHz
768 RAM

It gets more annoying now because I bought a Microsoft Intellimouse
Explorer for Bluetooth (some name!) which comes with a usb/Bluetooth
dongle. I bought it to replace my Logitech wireless mouse which
consumed too much battery and was somewhat beat up already. I kept the
Logitech wireless keyboard though.

Every 3hs more or less the mouse would stop working for no apparent
reason. Also I hear the sound that windows does whenever one
disconnects a usb device. In the Event Viewer, the following error
appears:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: HidBth
Event Category: None
Event ID: 2
Date: 9/28/2004
Time: 9:55:50 PM
User: N/A
Computer: POLARIS
Description:
Bluetooth HID device (00:50:f2:e8:f8:bb) either went out of range or
became unresponsive.

I tried connecting the Dongle to different ports, but it doesn't make
a difference. In Device Manager I can see 5 usb root hubs. I read
somewhere that the power manager setting in these should be un-checked
(allow the computer to turn off this device). Did this but the problem
persists. I have USB mouse, Onboard USB 2 and Onboard USB enabled in
the BIOS.

Other usb devices that I have connected are:
- A Flash Memory Card Reader (7 in 1)
- A Belkin 4 port usb 2 Hub (powered)
- A Microsoft Joystick
- A Usb 2 Portable HD

Some of these never get disconnected. I don't know what's going on
anymore. I'm clueless.

I'd appreciate any help. Regards

First thing to check is, go to Device Manager and under Universal Serial
Connections check the Power Management tab for each USB entry and ensure the
Power Saving Option is turned off.

I did clear the "Allow the computer to turn off this deviceto save
power" checkbox under Power Management for the 5 USB Root Hubs I have
in my system. To no effect I must say.

Is it common to have so many Root Hubs?

Thanks

I have 5 for Scanner, Printer, Wireless keyboard and mouse, and external
USB-HDD.

Have you tried deleting all entries in Device Manager under Universal Serial
Controllers, reboting and let Windows reinstall the drivers? Not sure why
that will address your problem but it won't do any harm and what do you have
to lose? I would try that.
