USB Devices not recognized

Running Dell 8300 with XP Home SP1. I am having a problem with USB devices not being recognized. Sometimes game controllers are and sometimes not, but usually unplugging them and changing slots works. Now, however, my printer isn't being recognized. I understand that one method of fixing this is to delete certain entries in the USB controllers section of Device Manager. There are several in there that are "host controllers" and several USB root hubs. Which of these should I delete? All of them or just the hubs?

Usually just the root hubs should fix the port problesm. If that does not
work, then you could try to remove the controller. Just make sure you have
yor origianl XP CD close by (Not a recovery CD).
