USB device not recognised

i have an iAudio M3 20Gb portable hardrive/mp3 player.
this device has worked faultlessly on too many different computers to
mention. from apple to pc and across all operating systems.
i recently did a re-format and reinstall on my machine, and went from win
2000pro to win XPpro. eversince this install i have had problems with my usb
devices (camera also, although that now works).
my device is installed on connecting and the bubble recognises the device,
and says it is installed and ready to use. however when i open the proprietry
software it says device not connected.
when i browse in my computer, there is no drive listed.... even though the
icon in the bottom right by the clock for 'safely remove hardware' is present.
what is going on?
please help, as i dont want to have to re-install everything again...already
lost 2 days of work on the bastard!!
thanks

Right click on My Computer... select Manage. On the following screen,
select Disk Management. Is the 'drive' of the MP3 player now appearing on
the right hand side of the screen? If so, assign it a drive letter.

After you did the installation of XP, did you remember to install the
motherboard chipset drivers?
