usb device freezes WinXP

okay, this is last resort to try to fix things before fresh install (which I
would really like to avoid).
Whenever I connect any usb device (usb memory stick, usb2serial converter,
....) to my laptop with winxp, it immedietally freeze and only hard reset
helps. Since I need to use serial port for my day2day work, this is useless
to me.
I tried reimoving so many programs which I installed with no help (I usually
don't load lot of useless crap on my laptop).
It happens when connecting to both usb ports. I tried deleting usb devices
in hw device manager, and then let winxp recreate them, but it didn't help.
Any idea how to restore working usb ports ? I hope someone can help me to
debug this.

thanks and regards,

Nevermind, I managed to solve the problem. Booted into safe mode and from
there it was not freezing. From safe mode, I reinstalled all drivers. Now
works fine.
