USB conflict

If somebody could help me it would be much appreciated.
I recently loaded Wireless USB Lan adapters to XP. Now
Windows does not recognize my external hard drive. I
have reloaded drivers, and the system says the hardware
is running fine; but the taskbar gives a message that the
USB device has malfunctioned and Windows does not
recognize it.
What can I do?
