USB CF reader problems - SP2 driver corrupt?

WinXP Home/SP2

Suddenly, neither of my previously reliable CF card readers will read a
compact flash card containing image data - I get a message stating that the
card is not formatted. The readers work fine on my notebook machine, and
I've tried several cards, with the same results.

Any ideas? Corrupt drivers? If so, how can I update - the XP driver update
in Device Manager goes for it initially, but then tells me that it cannot
continue...

Constructive suggestions, please - this is driving me nuts... :- (

These kind of device do not use very specific drivers, so that it not very
likely.
Do you have other USB devices to check with? (preferably something like
USB
flash memory drive, or a SD card or something like that). And if yes - do
they work properly?
(assuming that these are USB card readers that is...)
