USB card reader generation gap?

Is it likely that older kind of internal card reader would not be able
to read the latest generation of SD/MicroSD cards?

I can speak to say that a pre-SDHC card reader does not read those cards.
To ameliorate that situation I purchased an internal card reader from Newegg
for about $10.

I lately bought a Toshiba 2G MicroSD card with SD adaptor. I plugged it
into a Unitek Internal Card Reader I bought about 8 months ago and it
could not see it. I bought a cheap HK$20 SD Card Reader and it worked.

This puzzled me....

Forgot to mention that the Unitek Internal Card Reader can read multiple
formats, not just SD/Micro-SD as in the HK$20 one. I wonder whether this
was the problem....
