USB Audio Device

Does anyone know why a USB device which installs the USB Audio Device
drivers does NOT show up in the control panel, and hence, no software that
needs it? Device manager shows that it's installed and working, but that's
as far as it gets.

Many USB devices are plug&play, thus do not need to be installed
and will not be listed in the Add or Remove Programs in the Control
Panel for they are not Apps, but are listed as hardware. You can
rightclick it in Device Manager to Disable or uninstall it, etc.

Thank you for the response.

However - I should have been more clear - the control panel app that I was
referring to was the Sounds and Audio CP, not the Add/Remove Programs.

The hardware is a MIDI controller - PreSonus Faderport, and they do not have
a driver for it. Instead, it is designed to use the generic windows USB
Audio Device driver.

Windows correctly ID's the hardware and installes the driver when connected.
However, in some cases there is a problem where the device is not recognized
in software programs. When the device is not present, it is also now
showing up in the Sounds and Audio control panel - it should be listed under
the MIDI dropdown.

So it seems to be a Windows issue: What is the actual mechanism that
displays a device in the correct control panel location? The device is
there, it's installed as I said
