[ USB 2.0 with sp2 installed]

Some motherboards don't have USB 2.0 hardware, or may have a mixture of 1.1 and 2.0 ports. The fact that the operating system supports USB 2.0 won't make it work if your motherboard doesn't have USB 2.0 hardware.

This has happened to me a couple of times. I blow out the USB ports and
wipe the cable ends with isopropyl alcohol.

The OEM CD should have the drivers needed for the USB controllers on
that motherboard. Also look to the manufacturer's web site for drivers.

USB 2.0 drivers are "built-in" with Service Pack 1, which is part of Service
Pack 2. You may to to re-set the USB controller, in Device Management.

Look in Device Management (Device Manager) and check to see if you have a
"Enhanced" USB controller.

If not, then your motherboard might not have USB 2.0 ports, or they might not
be configured. Check the BIOS so as to correct this, if possible.

If yes, then clear out all the entries in USB section of Device Management.
Then, reboot and let XP re-detect all the USB controllers, ports and root hubs.

You are missing your chipset drivers, and maybe other drivers.

my windows disk includ sp2, my motherboard does support ubs 2.0 (or at least
did before the reinstalation of windows), if i try to install the usb 2.0
drivers off of the motherboard disk it sdais i already have them. also i dont
have the enhanced usb in the device manager. anything other ideas would be
great.

The chipset drivers--the chipset drivers--the chipset drivers--and
whatever
other drivers.....after a reinstall....

i tried the chipset drivers, then my computer wouldnt boot so i had to
reinstall windows and guess what for whatever reason usb 2,0 was disabled in
the BIOS, so anyone else with a similar problem check your BIOS.

I have experienced a similar problem. I have verified the presence of the
versions of the usb drivers that SHOULD support usb 2.0, but since
reinstalling XP Home (both SP1 and SP2 included) the only things that work
are the printer and the broadband modem. Flash memory, still camera, etc, are
no longer recognized or generate the "mass storage device" that is not
operational, but when looking at them in device manager, they cannot have
their drivers updated because being usb devices, they don't require them.
All of these devices worked FINE before I reinstalled XP Home. My main board
apparently has a VIA chipset. How can I know if I have the correct drivers or
not for them? What happened to them during/after the reinstall? All I really
want to do is get this working again but I am curious as to what the heck
happened.
