USB 2.0 to external IDE drive - 750 MB transfer took 16 minutes

I used a fast 7200 RMP Maxtor, and it was slow as molasses. ANyone
else had similar experiences?

I used one of the USB-to-IDE kits that comes with a USB cable with IDE
on the other end, and a power supply for your drive - not an
enclosure.

The ASUS P5AD2-E by default has the USB 2.0 controller DISABLED in
BIOS. So I enabled it. They then set iut to "Full Speed" by default,
which is only 128 Mbps. You have to then change that to "HiSpeed"
which is 480 Mbps.
