ASUS P4B266 Motherboard

Both front USB ports are hooked up to 2.0USB connector on
MB. Problem: Port will only recognize 1.1 USB items. If
I hook up my Lexar Jumpdrive it recognizes it fine, but
if I hook up my external CDRW drive it gives me the USB
not recognized error.

Note: If I hook up CDRW drive to rear USB2.0 port its
fine.

I want my system to work correctly and be able to utilize
USB 2.0 item via the front ports.

So, if you plug in a USB 1.1 item into a USB 2.0
port...will it reset the port to 1.1? I didn't know your
not supposed to plugs in different USB items in the same
port.

I ran into a similar problem with front USB connectors. USB 2.0 devices
were being detected as USB 1.1. The problem was the cable running from the
from USB connectors to the motherboard.

The cable was a simple flat ribbon cable about 3 feet long and I'm surprised
it worked with USB 1.1 devices.

You might want to check out the cable construction.

FYI
it is not a good idea to switch ports once you have a device attached.
You are supposed to connect a device to a port and mark that port so
that you DON'T connect something else to it. If you do the computer has
to reset the settings for that port. USB is strictly "set and forget"
and thats that! :-)

Where did you ever get that advice?

I have no solution, but perhaps it will make you feel
better to know that I never could get the front panel USB
to work at all on my ASUS P4S8X motherboard, not even at
USB 1.1 speed.

Instead, I bought a 3 foot USB 2.0 rated extension cable
and ran it from the back to the front, outside the PC. I
now plug into that cable. It is not exactly what I
wanted, but it does work at full USB 2.0 speeds, even with
a 52X CD-writer, a DVD-writer, and an external hard drive.

By the way, there is nothing wrong with connecting to
different USB ports, or more than one device to a single
port, just one at a time. XP seems to know that it is the
same device it have seen before.

It's interesting that someone else is having the exact
same issue. It boggles my mind why it will not work
correctly. Even when it hooked up the same way as the
rear 2.0USB hub.

I think your absolutely right. After many tests of the
system, connectors, etc...we have come to the conclusion
that it must be the cable/USB connector.

Was my impression that 1 advantage of USB is that u can
plug them anywhere. I dont switch them 4 no reason but
when I have (for my printer & cam) I had no problems.

Any advice given is my attempt to show appreciation for all

may only apply NUGS. Personal attacks, nitpicking & criticism
