USB 2.0 help

I just bought a new Dell 4600 computer last month with 8
USB 2.0 ports (6 front, 2 back). I have Windows XP Pro
SP1 installed. Yet, I still get the following annoying
error message once or twice a day...

"Generic USB hub is a hi-speed USB device and will
function at reduced speed when plugged into a non-HI
speed port"

I think SP1 has the USB 2.0 drivers so I should be good
from that perspective. I checked Windows Update and my
system is completely up to date. I have searched the web
for an answer without luck. I would appreciate anyone's
advice.

This message is posted when a USB1.0 (Hi_Speed) device
is plugged into a USB2.0 (Full_Speed) port. From the Text
of the message, it sounds like you have a Hub plugged into
one of the Full_Speed ports. Some devices like Keyboards
will have built-in hubs that you may not be aware of. You
should open Device Manager, Expand Universal Serial Bus
controllers and click each USB hub and check the port usage.

And what did Dell have to say? You did contact them didn't you?
SP1 sometimes doesn't automatically install the USB2.0 drivers
so then you have to install them manually. Look under Device
Manager to see if they are installed.

I called Dell a week ago and they had no clue and
referred me to Microsoft who referred me to Dell because
XP came factory installed. I think the drivers are
installed. How can I manually install them again to be
sure they are working properly?

Check in Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager at the USB
Controllers to see if there is an item for an 'Enhanced' controller (ie
a USB 2 one). There is a catch 22 with the Express method of installing
SP1 - if it does not find a USB 2 controller already installed it will
not download one.

A way round is to get the Win2000 drivers, which appear to be the same.
Go to Windows Update, on the left click 'Windows Update Catalog' (you
may need to enable that in the 'Personalise' first). Now take Drivers;
next page 'Other devices' at the bottom. then in the drop-downs select
'Microsoft Corporation'; Windows 2000 Professional RTM and enter USB in
the 'contains' pane. That will lead you to a page with NEC USB update,
which contains drivers for NEC INtel and VIA chipsets
