USB 2.0 Hard Drive using USB1 Root Hub

F

fjcmurphy

Hello!

I use Windows XP Pro (SP2) and have the following problem:

When I use my external HDD 250GB USB 2.0 and plug it into my IBM
Thinkpad T41
the HDD is almostr always detected as USB 1.1 and is placed in the USB
Root Hub of the
"Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller -24C4"

Sometimes it is placed properly in the USB 2.0 controller. How can I
tell my system
to use USB 2.0? It really drives me nuts, I'm trying ti make it work
all day.

Thanks alot in advance,
frank

p.s.: I know that the same topic was placed in 2003 but it didn't help
me.

Try this way:

Run Regedit and navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\Vid_XYZ&Pid_XYZ

In the right pane, check for the device of your external hdd, it should be
showing as huge removeable storage device. You should find it and may be more
than one keys. If so, backup the registry keys by right ckick on the Vid key
and click Export, save the backup reg file before delete the Vid keys.
If you can't delete the Vid key, right click on the Vid key and click
Permissions, check the Full Control Box and than click OK. After that, you
should be able to delete the Vid keys.

After deleted the respective Vid key for the huge removeable device, go to
device manager and than delete the USB Universal Host controllers and the
USB2 Enhanced Host controller, exit device manager and than reboot.
After reboot, windows should find new hardwares and install the proper
drivers. DO NOT DISTURB until windows intsall the drivers and confirm the
device is now operative. Go to device manager to check again.
You should find the USB Universal Host controller and the USB2 Enhanced Host
Controller.
Replug your external Hdd and try again.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for your help but unfortunately this didn't help. :(

Hopefully someone will have a resolution for this.

Cheers,

See if this works:

When your external HDD is recognized properly as USB 2.0 go to the Windows
Control Panel and select: System
From the System Properties window select the Hardware tab and at the bottom
of this window click on: Hardware Profiles
Create a new profile and then pick the a 'Hardware Profile Selection' option
on how you want Windows to select a profile.

I HAVE the manual for my motherboard. Someone on this list told me to
look in device manager for "enhanced," which would indicate USB 2.0.
Another told me to look for the EHCI entry and update the driver to
bring the ports up to USB 2.0 standard.

The motherboard says I have 2.0 ports but need to get the drivers.
That was published in Nov. 2001, but the mobo was installed on Aug.
2001.

Later, I applied SP1 to XP Home. The USB 2.0 drivers are included in
SP1. Somebody on this list told methat I do not have USB 2.0 ports
because they weren't available in 2001 and that I need to buy a USB
2.0 card.

As you see, I've been getting conflicting information. I need to
figure out
1. Do I have USB 2.0 ports? (yes, because the ASUS user's
manual says so).
2. Do I have USB 2.0 drivers installed?
3. How do I find out if I have USB 2.0 driver's installed?
4. If they aren't installed, how do I install them?

Hi,

I use an ASUS motherboard P4B266 since year 2000 and could obtain the NEC
USB 2.0 drivers from ASUS website at that time. I could use the USB 2.0 ports
without problems though at that time there were seldom devices using USB 2.0.
The drivers name was NEC PCI to USB Enhanced Host controllers.
I updated to SP1 on year 2002 and again updated to SP2 on year 2005, the USB
2.0 drivers was also the same.

I would suggest you to go to device manager, open the universal serial bus
controllers and than uninstall the universal serial bus Host controllers and
than reboot. Windows should find new hardwares and install the proper
drivers. Go to device manager again and open the Universal serial bus
controllers, if you can find the USB Enhanced Host controllers, than the USB
2.0 drivers is properly installed.

Hope it helps

Thanks, Peter. I'll give that a try. I'll make a restore point
first. Will that let me go back?

BTW, I like your accent. Japanese?

OK Guys,. I got into the Bios.

============================================================
BIOS & MY CHANGS:
One selection was whether to allow Legacy USB 1.1 to be enabled.
I left it enabled.
Another selection was whether to allow Enhanced USB. I changed
it to ENHANCED.
Another selection was for USB 1.1 -- its options were None, 1, 2,
or 3 controllers. It was set at three and I left it there.

I rebooted. All USB devices are working.

============================================================
I checked Device Manager. It says:

UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS
Generic USB Hub
Intel 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD
Intel 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2
Intel 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4
Intel 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
============================================================

Here are my QUESTIONS:
1. Why do I have TWO "USB Root Hub? ________
2. How many of my USB ports are set to USB 2.0?
3. What do 24CD, 24C2, 24C4 and 24C7 mean?
4. I have SIX USB ports on the ATX case. Four are in the back
-- same as in the mobo manual and the manual you had me download. the
other TWO are on the right-side of the computere case. WHICH ports
are showing up in Device Manager?
5. Is there a way to plug in a USB "tester" into each port and
check the speed, and find out that way if they are set to USB 1.1 or
to USB 2.0?
7. If I DISABLE Legacy Support for USB 1.1, will my old USB
devices still work?
8. Should I set the USB 1.1 settings to NONE?

============================================================
AFTERTHOUGHTS:
9. Do I still have to install a separate USB 2.0 card, as
earlier recommended?
10. Do I still have to install XP Home SP 2 in order to get USB
2.0 drivers, as earlier suggested?

Thanks so much for your patience. It's frustrating for me, but
bit by bit I learn a little more, and get my computer to do what I
need.

To find someone who can read the questions and answer them, and to
figure out what advice will really work. Over the past several
months, as I've posted questions on how to go from 1.1 to 2.0, I've
gotten all kinds of conflicting answers.

Hi,

1. It may be that the USB 2.0 head are not yet connected or NOT properly
connected from the motherboard to the USB ports at the back and front of the
ATX case.
2. I would guess 4, 2 at the front and 2 at the back.
3. They are the controllers on the USB Root Hubs, U may go to Intel website
for more detail info, I think it should be Intel 845 chipset for your mobo.
4. I think the two USB 2.0 heads on the motherboard are not or NOT properly
connected so that only 2 USB ports which are directly connected to the mobo
are in working condition and I think they are only USB 1.1
5. the simpliest way is to insert a USB2.0 flash drive into USB port, if the
port is USB1.1, you will see a popup warning messages that a high speed USB
device is connected to a low speed USB hub.
7. No
8. No

BTY, what is the model of your mobo?
Have you opened the case to ensure all the USB ports are properly connected
in accordance with the mobo manual?

Hi Peter,
This was a very helpful answer. I'm not sure, however, if I can
rely on my USB 2.0 flash/thumb drive, as I believe I tweaked teh
settings a long time ago to stop showing the popup warning that I had
a 2.0 device in a 1.1 port.
There are four ports on the back, and two on the right side.
None in the front.

Hi,

First, are all the six USB ports work properly or only the two USB ports at
the right side working as a USB1.1 hub?

Secondly, what is the model of your mobo?

G

Hi Peter,
The mobo is ASUS P4BGL-VM.
All six ports "work" -- I can plug in a USB device and it works.
I don't know if the ports work at USB 2.0 speed or USB 1.1 speed,
however.
Sorry about the multiple posts -- my Agent newsreader insists on
inserting an additional "Re:" in the subject line each time I post.
Weird.

Hi,

Yes, your mobo should have 4 USB2.0 ports and 2 USB 1.1 ports

The data transfer rate of USB 2.0 is 40 times faster than USB1.1 or nearly
eqv. to ATA 66
USB 1.1 supports data transfer rates of 12 Mbps or 1.43MB per second
USB 2.0 supports a transfer rate of up to 480 Mbps or 57.22MB per second

Use your flash drive to test for the data transfer rate of the USB ports:

1. transfer a large file over 100MB e.g. a vedio clip from the Hdd to the
flash drive using the USB port at the right side of your PC and measure the
time taken for the complete file to be transferred, note down the time.
I think this USB port is USB 1.1 and should take more than 1 minute to
complete the data transfer.

2. transfer the same file using one of the USB port at the back of the
machine.
If it is USB 2.0, the data transfer should be completed within 4 seconds.

Pls post back for the outcome
