Hi all experts,

I am experiencing a "ACCESS DENIED" problem.
My computer was down, and I just recovered the C Drive. After the recovery,
when i tried to access the D: My Document>My Picture, the window prompted me
for "ACCESS DENIED".
Before the computer recovered, I have change to orginal path of MY DOCUMENT
which is located from C: to D:. It seems that my files are still here after
recovery, but I cannot access it. PLEASE HELP!!!

Million Thanks.

Hi Kaci,
I'm not really an expert but I'll give it a go by suggesting you need to
take ownership of the folder you are trying to access. Right click the
folder , then click properties, followed by the security tab. That should
tell you which group owns that folder. Now click advanced and select the tab
marked Owner. The dialog box should say something like Change Owner to. You
should see your login id and thats the one you select. Also check the box to
replace owner on subcontainers. This should work with XP Pro. XP Home may
not show a Security tab for the folder-in which case I think you need to
switch off Simple File Sharing-I can't verify because I no longer have PCs'
with Home on. Hope it works

Okay its either a cacls (Access control List) issue or the file is corrupt
and can not be read from.
1. Try to check the drive for errors. Goto the drive where the data is
stored and right click, properties, extras and start a chkdsk.
2. i] If it is really a ACL error then there are two methods to get access
to these files.
Youve got the choice hard and short or long and easy!?
Lets start with the hard and short way. Press the windows key and r
simultaneously.
type "cmd" and hit enter.
Youll see a black window. Type cacls and all the parameters which can be
used with the command are displayed. So for exapmle, in your case...

CACLS D:\My Document\My Picture /T /E /P "youre account name":F

ii] Now the easy way... but takes ages... when youre computer boots hit the
F8 button continuosly until a menu appears. select safe mode...
once the system is ready goto those files and right click the folder...
properties... scout the tabs... youll see one which has access settings for
the users...
I dont know of by heart but you have to select youre account and give
yourself the rights you want.

-JADM, excuse the terrible translation... my XP is in german.
Hope it helped. Sry if i hurt your ego by explaining it with so much detail.
Wasnt my intention. ^^
