I have XP Home. Tonight my computer rebooted for no apparent reason. Nobody
was using it at the time. Now when I turn the computer on I get a screen
asking for a windows login password. I have never used a password so I just
clicked OK. The computer is set up as a one person machine. ie. anyone in
my family can turn the computer on and use it. I have never had separate
user accounts or any passwords. How can I restore the computer to the way it
was. Also, when I double click on "Add/Remove Programs" nothing happens.
Suddenly I can't add or remove programs on my own computer. Please help me
sort this out. Thanks in advance.

some wireless keyboards have the ability to turn on the pc, even though the
pc seems to appear
to have no power... sort of like a delayed auto reboot. now that i
remember, some newer
keyboards have that ability too.

check your cmos power settings and turn
off any of those wake on lan, etc... options...

If you go to the run command and type "control userpasswords2" (no quotes)
you can remove the option for users to use a name and password to login.
When you remove the selection and click OK the next window will ask for the
user name to use to always login after you have entered your user click on
OK.
Perhaps you need to do a full virus & adware scan to see why things have
changed.
