Urgent need - boot new cloned HDD - prob...

R

Rob

Excuse me if this seems terminally foggy headed, and please read on for this
clueless newbie:

Western Dig. Used data lifeguard. The utility completed preparing,
partitioning (used the recommended values) and cloning.

It will not boot as single disk. With new disk slaved to pre-existing
bootable HDD, the new drive is displayed in Dev Man and My Pute, with
contents and sizes accurate.

New drives (partitions) are labeled Drive 2, volumes 1-4, named H I J &K.

How do I rename the partit's in the new drive, and How check that boot
records and whatnot were setup by lifeguard.

Thanks very much if you can read this through, and more if you don't mind
too much giving simple complete guidance that even I can understand.

After cloning the drive, did you remove all other drives, install this one
as a the Master on the primary IDE channel, set the jumpers properly, and
boot only with that drive in the system

Hello Rock, sorry I did not see your response earlier.
Yes, I removed the old drive, set jumpers correctly, ran new drive as sole
primary master. Boot up commenced, went through the XP animation screen, the
welcome screen, the enter windows sound, and to the desktop (with
background, that is). But no action there. No taskbar. I.e., could not
summon Win Explorer or anything, including shut down computer. Please let me
know if I can supply any further info.
Thanks again,

Well sometimes cloning doesn't work using the drive utility. I don't know
why. I've done it a couple of times with no problems, but others have
reported problems. If the WD utility doesn't work you could use some
commercial software to clone the drive such as Acronis True Image or
Symantec Ghost. I don't know if BootIt NG (Terabyte Unlimited) will do
this. If it does they do offer a 30 day full featured trial version.

I currently use Acronis True Image Home version 10. In general a drive
imaging program is a good investment, saving images to an external hard
drive as a regular backup. ATI will do drive cloning as well as imaging.

You could also try running some of the commands from the recovery console to
see if you can fix the boot on the drive you have copied.

Recovery Console commands

Specifically look at using:
Fixmbr
Fixboot
Bootcfg /rebuild

Glad to have the links you gave in your post. Am working still with WD tech
support. If they finally admit that their software is not working for me,
I'll try your Acronis. Last night, I ran the zeroing out app in their
diagnostic floppy. Long long time, and I quit after only about 20%
completion. That may be enough at least to cover the windows
drive-partition. More later with new-news after my upcoming struggles, with
a fresh subject line. I appreciate you help.

Afterthougt, which should have been prior to posting my previous reply:

I'm running Win XP Home (standard), not XP Professional. Have searched for
the page similar to the one you gave that applies to home, but not found. If
you happen to know it, please post. Thank you again.

The use of the Recovery Console and the commands therein is independent of
Home or Pro.
