How often do workstations in a domain communicate with domain controllers
after a user has logged in? Is there any traffic happening between the
workstation and Domain controllers after the initial user logon? Thanks.

What is the urgent concern about if we may ask?

If it involves Group Policy, a typical Windows client by default will
refresh every 90 minutes.

The urgency is because we are migrating a NT4 domain to W2K. We suggested
windows 2003 but they did not buy that. Now they wish to economize on DCs
and hence I need to come up with a detailed propsition as to why we need more
DC, supported by MS whitepapers if possible. So can anybody please point me
in the direction of possible whitepapers etc? I have until Monday to come up
with a satisactory reason.

I would use the task manager and track your traffic through the Networking
TAB..

It is a question of project requirements, design and practical
considerations, to name a few. For example, do multiple locations exist with
many users per site? Is fast login response / authentication critical? Is AD
administration centralized or distributed? etc., etc.
