inaccessible mapped drives

Hi,

I have a Win2000 server (domain controller) and some WinXP and Win2000
workstations logged to the domain. Every so often some mapped drives become
inaccessible, with a red cross on them. Only rebooting the workstations
restores the mapped drives.

Any idea how why this happens and hot to fix it?

Thanks

it's actually normal behavior
a kind of time out on the connection
the moment you click on the icon for the mapped drive the client will
reconnect
you can change this by manipulating the registry

Yes,...you stop using mapped drives and start using "shortcuts" based on the
UNC path. Mapped drive *by design* will timout to avoid wasting
resources,...they automatically reconnect when they are accessed. The red
"X" is just an Icon and the icon doesn't always "switch" when the drive is
re-accessed,...so the drive works inspite of the "X" being there,...it is
just a dumb Icon that doesn't always refresh properly in Explorer to show
the Icon without the "X".

Even with all that, mapped drives are just trouble and they don't always
re-connect as they should. They are from the dinosaur era, when DOS was the
common OS, and should be eliminated.

thanks for this. the win2000 machine does exactly what you say; when I
double-click on the mapped drive it reconnects and the drive is accessible.
But the winxp machine just hangs forever when trying to access the mapped
drive and eventually throws an error message which is why i have to reboot in
order to reestablish the connection.

any idea on the registry tweak?

Cheers
