UPS on screen notification problem

I have had a UPS connected for awhile and it is monitored using the built in XP software ups.exe. This works fine, but recently I noticed that the notification that is supposed to appear on the screen when power is lost or restored no longer appears. A power failure IS recognized by the machine and the event log shows both loss and restoration of power. Further, I have the parameters set to shut the machine down in 8 minutes and it indeed does this. I have the notification set for 10 seconds and 60 seconds thereafter. All works well except the notification never appears on the screen. Has anyone else seen this problem? My guess is something is missing in the registry. This problem could have happened 6 months ago and a restore point now would have been long overwritten.

Ideas??

Hi David,

Thanks for your posting.

Based on the current status, it seems that the UPS service is working well
without any problem. So please locate two Widows XP machines. One is which
you encountered the problem and the other is the one which is in normal
status with UPS notification. Then export the following registry keys,
sub-keys and values to compare if there are any differences:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UPS

If you found some registry values are missing or the values are different
from the ones on the normal Windows XP machine, do the proper modification
to make them be same as the ones on the normal Windows XP machine. A reboot
is needed after modifying the registry values.

For more information about the registry of UPS service, please refer to the
following document:

One other possibility exists for your problem. I believe the UPS service
uses the Messanger service to display messages. Awhile ago, there was a
problem where SPAM was being sent via the Messenger service. The temporary
workaround was to disable the Messenger service. Windows SP2 has corrected
the problem. However, the Messenger service will remain disabled until you
re-enable it.

The Messenger service was the problem, I started it, set it to automatic (was manual) and all is well.

Thanks for the suggestions.
