UPH Clean

I just received Microsoft Download Notifications: March 16, 2007. One of the
updates or programs is User Profile Hive Cleanup Service - UPH Clean. It is
suppose to speed up log off and shut down? Has anyone downloaded and
installed this program? If so, does it work and does it cause any problems? I
downloaded it, but have not executed it yet.

I installed this about a year ago and have been using it since. My

about 10 seconds. I uninstalled it one time to check if was still
making a difference, and shut down time went back to 30-45 seconds.
Installed it again and time is now 10 seconds again.

Hello,

I've also used it for some time and noted a faster shutdown time.

This from Microsoft:

A service to help with slow log off and unreconciled profile problems.

And a more technical description:

User Profile Hive Cleanup Service deals with application EvenID 1000
from source Userenv where the message indicates that the profile is
not unloading and produces the error: ` The operating system was
unable to load your profile. Please contact your Network
Administrator...` The service monitors for logged off users that still
have hives loaded. When that happens the service determines which
applications have handles opened to the hives and releases them. It
logs the application name and what registry keys where left open.
After this the system finishes unloading the profile.

The EventID 1000 is what initially prompted me to install this
service.

How and where do I find it. And if I was able to get Bootvis to work I
would have a faster startup also. But it gets screwed up by my flash
drive that is built in to my Dell.

Thanks Bob and Claymore. I am always cautious when it comes to the registry.
I'll give it a try and see if it speeds up my shut down. If either of you use
Macecraft jv16 Power tools 2006 (registry cleaner) are there any conflicts?

DrJoel,
I signed up for Microsoft Download Notifications and Yesterday I received
an automated notification on downloads. User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
(UPH Clean) was one of the downloads.

Dr. Joel,

Roger,

"If either of you use Macecraft jv16 Power tools 2006 (registry

I've used an earlier version of jv16 for years with no conflict at
all.

scan thru the event log for entries re: "the user registry was unloaded
while still in use....", or something to that effect. These are the
"errors" that the UPHClean service will eliminate, thus speeding up
shutdown. If you don't have any of these errors in your log then you
really don't need it [but I bet you do - I see these errors on "pure"
MS-only systems all the time, virgin installs w/ nothing but XP. MS
rarely follows it's own rules...]

Thanks, both are waiting to be executed. I am just being cautious.

I was cautious for a while, but then I threw caution to the wind and
installed it anyway. Nothing evil has happened. I haven't logged off,
but I did shutdown my PC (while I was working on the house wiring) so I
assume that took me through a logoff cycle of sorts.
