Upgrading XP Pro to Vista Business

Will an "upgrade" from XP Pro to Vista Business require
reinstalling all of the existing software, or will Vista B
upgrade allow me to keep the existing software settings?

Thanks

Gerald--

However, we would have to qualify this answer and say that not all software
that works on XP is going to work on Vista.

You may have to consult the software maker's website or box. There are
also websites that try to keep track of compatibility as well. Most of your
software will work well on Vista, but there are a panoply of exceptions and
a lot of them have been discussed on this newsgroup. For example, if you
have Windows One Care and it's not 1.5, then it's not going to work on
Vista. I haven't had any of my software that doesn't work on Vista with the
exception of having to update Perfect Disk, and One Care, and I have Nero 6+
working perfectly on it.

I could name you a number of drivers (they're software) that don't work on
Vista after it's gone on sale.

I do have OneCare and it is version 1.5
Sounds like the upgrade should be relatively painless, but I
will definitly backup XP with Acronis before I attempt it!

Yes the Vista Business Upgrade can do an in place upgrade of XP Pro. Make
sure you run the Upgrade Advisor first. Uninstall the AV program, firewall
and any system level utilities along with any software indicated by the
advisor as being incompatible before doing the upgrade.

Absolutely backup XP with your Acronis.

I don't think you'll have many applications that might not be compatible,
but there are definitely some applications that had to be reworked to be
Vista compatible. Nero 7 for example had problems for a good while.

Yes, it will work with all your programs for the most part. You can run
the upgrade advisor and it will tell you which are not compatible (most
likely your anti-virus, firewall, etc. won't be).
