Upgrading XP home to XP professional

Is there any risk of losing files when doing this? Should I take any steps
to prevent this from happening?

You should continue following your normal backup procedure plus do one
precautionary extra backup right before you take on anything major like
changing your OS from one version to another (or even one service pack level
to another.)
