Just got my new system with XP Home, realize a program I use requries XP
Pro, would like to upgrade. What does it cost? Can I download the upgrade
online? Does it usually go smoothly? Any tips?

Thanks,

Stu

You can purchase a "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP
Professional at your favorite store that sells computer software.
It retails for approximately $199.00 U.S. There is no online download
available.

1. Purchase a conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP Professional.
2. Uninstall your current antivirus program.
3. Perform a backup of your important documents and files to a CD.
4. Disconnect all hardware peripheral devices, except the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
5. While running Windows XP Home, insert the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and select
the default "Upgrade" setup option. [Do not select "New Installation"]
6. Visit the Windows Update site to download all the critical updates.
7. Reinstall your antivirus program and defrag your hard drive.

Should you have a legitimate qualification, you may be able to buy the
Academic Edition of XP Pro Upgrade. This will save some dollars.

Contact the supplier of your new system and ask about exchanging it
for an otherwise identical model with XP Pro installed. That would be
the least costly method.

Otherwise purchase the XP Pro Upgrade version at any computer
retailer. Shop around a bit as prices to vary.

Good luck

Well, here's how it went for me. I had XP Home SP2, popped the XP Pro upgrade
CD in, started the upgrade. An hour later, I get prompted with a message
saying it can't copy some files out of an i386 folder on the CD. The options
are to continue with the installer, and forget about these files, or cancel
the install. I chose to cancel the install. So what did it do? I did the
install. So now the machine won't boot at all.

Me being the dumb person I am, though since this was only an upgrade that I
wouldn't worry too much about it. So i didn't backup my files. I guess
nothing changes with Microsoft. A standard XP Home machine, a standard XP Pro
upgrade, and it doesn't work.

How am I typing this right now? On my Mac, which has never had a problem -
ever.
