What software package do I need to upgrade my home
version of XP to one that has Word and Excel and
Powerpoint.

Thanks,

Marty

Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are not part of the Windows OS. You need to
purchase Microsoft Office to obtain them. It can then be installed on top
of Windows XP.

You do not install Office ontop of Windows XP. You install Office into
Windows XP. Office is not an operating system (OS) and does not take over
Windows XP.

You install it into Windows? Meaning it become part of
Windows? Nope, You install it ontop of Windows, it does
become part of Windows, it becomes a program running ontop
of Windows. Can a program run into Windows? Nope

You will have to buy the Microsoft Office Suite to get these applications.
You could buy them as pieces but more expensive than the Suite.

This is not an upgrade of Windows XP but a stand-alone suite of applications.

Office 2003 is now out on the shelves, but previous versions(2000 and 2002)
can still be purchased at most software retailers or from MS directly. Office
97 can be found on Ebay.

Windows XP is an operating system - those other items are applications
that run on it, part of the Microsoft Office package, and you have to
get that (or reinstall an old version you have removed from a previous
system)
