I have two computers both currently running Windows ME. My
question after I purchase the ugrade, can I install
Windows XP onto both of my home computers?
Thanks.

No. You will need to purchase two upgrades.
If you like, you can get a very small discount by purchasing a second
license directly from Microsoft.

No, the license is for one computer per copy. You will need to purchase a
second license for the other system.

You can install XP on both computers using the same CD and CD key, but you
can only do so by saying "YES" to the agreement that specifies the software
is limited to one install per license when you install XP to the second
computer. In all likelihood no one will know but you that you lied to
facilitate your getting over on the EULA activatation scheme. No death
squads or even a slap on the wrist are likely to happen. But what happens if
you die and pass on this legal limbo to your adoring family? How do they
resolve the legalities if confronted?

Windows - including your present ME - is always sold as a license to
use. One single copy is licensed to one single machine (though it may
be transferred). You would need to buy two copies. If you tried
installing one on two machines you would find that its 'activation'
would fail on the second

Of course not. The rule is quite clear. It's one copy (or one
license) for each computer.

There's nothing new here. This is exactly the same rule that's
been in effect on every version of Windows starting with Windows
3.1. The only thing new with XP is that there's now an
enforcement mechanism.

Depends on who you think is in charge in your home. Microsoft or you?

I see there's a lot of people who'd like to make that decision for you
out and about today, but of course only you can decide what right for
you in your home.

Doesn't matter, you bought the copy with the right to install it on
one PC.

It would be your personal choice that MS is in charge in home.
