A friend of mine tols me I could upgrade my system to SP2
so I ran the network install of SP2 on my Win98 system and
the thing is now broke. I can't beleive I installed
anything from M$. It wont boot so I have no way of
unistalling it. Is there a way to at least get into safe
mode so I can transfer all of my pictures (4 gig) onto
disks?

Thanks,
Bill

Bill, SP2 is for XP, not Win98. Your friend is the culprit, not MS, and you
are a fool for believing him or her. And on top of that, you didn't back up
before installing an update that you shouldn't???

Remember, back up is a computer user's best friend.

How can a windows update not be for a Windows machine????
I think this update is crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BIll

There are several Windows Operating Systems ranging from Win98 - WinXP.
Why would you run an update (not Upgrade) specifically designed for WinXP which
is well documented on a Win98 machine and then when things don't turn out, you
blame others?
Blame yourself, not others. Note that it doesn't mention Win98!

Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) provides new proactive security
technologies for Windows XP to better defend against viruses, worms, and
hackers. In addition to a more robust security infrastructure, SP2 improves the
security configuration options of Windows XP and provides better security
information to help users faced with security decisions.

The pistons for a Model T Ford don't work in a 2004 Ford
Mustang either.

That's my problem it didn't install. I thought XP meant
expensive so I stayed with 98 and Figured I could update
to XP for cheap, or I mean free.

Umm, but how would a XP service pack install on a 98 setup?

You probably don't. Maybe next time you'll do a back up before doing
something foolish like this, maybe not. The only horrible thing is what you
did to your poor computer.

SP2 shouldn't have corrupted your file system. There are many ways
to get your data off of your drive before you reformat your
C drive and reinstall everything from scratch.

The easiest was is to borrow a desktop system that has a CD/DVD
burner. Take the disk out of your system and make it a secondary drive
in the second system, You'll be able to browse the disk and burn
anything you want to keep.

I'm suprised MS didn't put prereq-checking into it's upgrade script. I
wonder how many people are going to do the same thing on their w2k
system.

LOL. You're kidding right? Well, XP is pretty expensive !!

US$90. It's a nice upgrade from w/98, which you've been running for 5
years.

If you want "free" go Linux (which I like).

Nice job asshat! I've heard that if you upgrade your coffee cup with mustang
custom seats you can drive that to work.... Give it a try and let me know how
well that runs?
I think that you have lost all the many years of saved porn!

SP2 for XP will not install on Win98, period.
