Upgrading to XP Pro without Activating XP Home Upgrade

Quick Facts:
- computer came with XP home pre-installed and pre-
activated.
- only recovery disks given reformat the HD then
reinstall windows
- Dad bought new comp. was given XP Home Upgrade

I:
- got no help from HP or Microsoft at all
- decided to use his upgrade cd to repair my windows
- didn't realize that even after choosing to repair that
an activation was required,
I was repairing not installing.

So I can't activate. My question is, can I install new
and bought XP Pro without
activating XP Home?

I found a good price on a XP Pro Updgrade Academic
price. It's gonna be part of
my B-day present, but before I buy I want to know that it
will work.

An "upgrade" CD will require either a real Windows CD for
proof or a working Windows installation... I would see if
you can find an academic full install CD.

Hi Jim,

He did state that it was installed, just not activated. I would agree that
any student should indeed get the full academic version whenever possible.
Why mess with an upgrade version if you don't have to....

I have to...No money and hours of classwork that has to
be done on the computer...coding, database, etc.

Hi,

I think maybe you missed the point - get the full version, not the upgrade,
it will do the upgrade as well, and it won't matter if you have a qualifying
product at a later date. The academic versions are generally cheap, and
often free through the educational institution.
