Upgrading to Xp Home Edition ?

Hi I am new here and this is my first post. I want to be
sure I am posting the question in the proper place.

I have searched the MKB all day and can't find anything.

I have a question about upgrading from ME to Xp Home
Edition..I'm getting an error and Xp won't install. It's
telling me the hard drive is corrupted when in fact under
ME the hard drive is working fine ??

Where is the best place to post this question on these
newsgroups so I can get help and not waste anyones time ?

Here on the Xp newsgroups ? or over on the ME
newsgroups ? And what category ?

Sorry for all the dum questions but as I say I'm brand
new here..

Go back to the knowledge base and follow the instructions for doing a
"clean" boot. Then try reinstalling. It sounds like you might some software
interfering with the installation. Do you use any disk compression
utilities?

Giving such advice without warning him to make sure he has a
backup of any data or anything else he can't afford to lose is an
extremely dangerous thing to do. I hope he hasn't already done
what you suggest.

Maybe I should also point out that I was doing a clean install. If you are
just upgrading an OS that is still on the hard drive, XP will see the files
it needs to make sure it's an upgrade just fine. So, if you've wiped you
hard drive lets say, you would need to install windows 98 first, then
install Windows XP over it if you don't have another Windows 98 disk that XP
can check to make sure it's an upgrade. But, if you have such a disk, a
clean install would be best.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective hardware
(particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still
support Win9x.
