Can I upgrade from windows 98 SE to windows 2000 and do I need to uninstall
my virus protection first. Should I expect to lose data or have difficulty
reconecting to my cable modem.

You can try upgrading, and no you should'nt lose data, but you should
allways backup when doing such an operation.
You would need to disable your AV, you will likely need Win2k drivers for
various hardware, eg graphics card, modem etc.
However an upgrade isnt recommended, you will suffer less problems by doing
a clean install, having backed up all data.

NO you cannot upgrade from win98 or 98se or winME to win2000
but you can run the Install-disk and it will tell you that it cannot upgrade
but do you want to install a fresh copy.select yes,
then on one of the windows it will have a tick box that you can select so
you can select your own partition during setup, SELECT THIS...
when it comes to the part to select the partition make sure that you DO NOT
upgrade the drive but you must leave the partition as it is and install to
that...

after the install you will find that alot of your programs on win98 will
still run on the win2000 operating system without reinstalling them...
but you will have to navigate to C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs
then you can see which of your programs will still run without reinstalling
them....

i run both winME and win2000 server on the sam fat32 partition without any
problems..
also the win2000 is alot more stable on fat32 than ntfs

What was your source for this statement, "you cannot upgrade from win98 or 98se or winME to win2000?" Windows ME yes but not the others.

The Server maybe not but the Professional the only one that is not supported is from ME.
