'upgrading' to Win2k server from professional

J

Jo Wolf

I was wondering if anyone can help me - We have a machine with Win2k
Professional on it, which we would like to upgrade to Win2k Server -
We have the software/CD (full version) & a licence, but the Setup
says we can't go from Prof -> Server. It only offers us a fresh
install (upgrade grayed out)

Question - is this a real limitation, is this workaroundable (if so,
how!)?

Thanks
Jo

There is no supported upgrade path from any version of workstation to any
version of server.

Thanks - Do you know of any 'unsupported' upgrade paths you could
point us to ? - we really don't want to lose all the other application
installtions if we can help it !

Thanks

No I really don't. I can't imagine why you would want to go to that much
trouble for a corrupt install of Windows server.

Jo -

One approach that I took for the development group (former employer and
Microsoft global partner) was to create a dual boot
on the specific machine for W2K Server and W2K Professional. This approach
was taken for 2 reasons:

1.) We had some applications that would only operate in the W2K Prof
environment.
2.) It allowed programmers to test program segments on the W2K Server
environment, without having to request access to
another W2K computer in the test environment.
3.) At the end of the work week, we could boot this machine as a W2K Server
for the weekends hosting and automated file transfer activities.

IF you desire to take this approach, read the MS Knowledgebase articles on
dual booting (as well as Google search for great independent "How To" web
sites). I would also recommend a separate hard drive for the W2K Server
install... whether you desire for Pro or Server to be on the primary IDE
bootable drive is determined by your desired operations.

Good luck,

Greg

There is no supported "upgrade" path from a workstation OS to a
server OS. And I certainly wouldn't want to trust critical business
data to a machine where someone had managed to force such a kludged
upgrade. Back-up your data and perform a clean installation.
