Upgrading to Win XP Pro

Was using Win ME and decided to upgrade to XP Pro, so
followed all the instructions (i'd set xp pro up before on
diff machines and never had problems) Anyway, it gets to
about 24 min left on installation and an error message
pops up: Setup cannot upgrade some settings. After Setup
completes, you may need to reinstall one or more programs.

checked the setup log and it had [error=32(20h)] tagged
onto the end of error.

but after the first error, i click ok and then i get a
fatal error: An error has been encountered that prevents
Setup from continuing.
Setup will now restart your computer & try again. If this
error continues to occur, select cancel Windows XP Setup
when your computer restarts.

However, when the machine restarts, i cant find an option
to cancel setup, tried booting from the CD and choosing
cancel setup hut it goes back to 55 min left on install,
and i cant see a cancel button anywhere on the screen
(though i often miss obvious things)
Dunno what to do, think what ill end up doing is removing
the harddrive & try get all the files across then format
removed HDD and install from there, though i would prefer
a better solution.

Did you run the 'Upgrade ADvisor' FIRST?
Did you uninstall any incompatible software or drivers before
the upgrade?
Maybe some third party software is making XP not load up.

Looks like a reformat and clean install is required.
