Upgrading to Vista Retail Version

When the final retail version of Vista is available can I do a clean install
with an upgrade version or do I have to have XP installed already on my
system to effect the upgrade? In other words, if I have my original XP Pro
disk available to substanciate I own a genuine copy, can I format my hard
drive and do a clean install of Vista with an upgrade version?

Yes you can do a clean install, but you will be asked to provide your full
XP Pro as a qualifying product for the upgrade.

I believe so..what will more than likely happen is it will ask you at some
point for the XP CD.

You have to be inside the existing OS. No more insert
the legacy CD\DVD for detection.

As the others have mentioned, Vista upgrade should work the same as
XP. You will be prompted to insert your XP disc so it can be verified
as legitimate, and then proceed to do a clean install.

While I don't know absolutely that you're correct, it stands to reason.
Previous versions of Windows have allowed for this, so, I don't see why
Vista would be any different.

Can't see that working as I said in another post. What happens to people who
have XP pre-installed with no re-install disc? Once Vista Upgrade is done
from within XP, deleteing the XP installation, there would be no way for
these users to re-install Vista again, rendering the Upgrade disc useless.
Even an OEM re-install partition on the HD would no longer work as Vista
would change the bootloader
