Upgrading SD-RAM

I have recently bought 256mb Ram to install in the slot previously used for
64mb RAM. When I put it in (with an existing 128mb RAM) it shows a total of
261mb. When the card is in on its own it only shows 128mb.
I read a previous thread which said the card may be incompatible or some
memory could be used for the inbuilt graphics card.
How can I tell what is happening? I have recently installed XP so the layout
is all new to me. I have looked and looked and cant find a memory
troubleshooter or anyway I can test the memory.
How can I tell if it is not compatible - and if it sint compatible, how do I
know which memory to buy?
On start up it definitely says 261mb RAM (with my old 128mb RAM and new
256mb RAM installed)
Sorry if this is a really obvious question, but I am very new to upgrading
anything.
Thanks
Michelle

You need to establish that the correct memory has been purchased and that it
is in the correct slot..

www.crucial.com will advise on memory type, and your motherboard manual will
help with placement..
