upgrading motherboard for my SL4C8

sSpec Number SL4C8
Processor Frequency 1.00 GHz
CPUID String 0686
Package Type 370 pin
Core Voltage 1.750
Bus Speed 133 MHz
Thermal Guideline 26.1W
Core Stepping cC0
Thermal Spec 70°C
L2 Cache Size 256 KB
L2 Cache Speed 1.00 GHz
Bus/Core Ratio 7.5

Have searched to find out HOW to find a motherboard that will
accommodate the above spec CPU and what I need to consider - eg what
strength power supply does it need - (my existing supply on the case
reads 115 280VAC-1. (can't read rest)) - which chip should i go for -
all stuff like that. i'd like a list really of mobo criteria to
consider.

I want to do is find the best/fastest P3, socket 370 FC-PGA motherboard
to fit my old motherboard's (GA60XT-A) peripherals (sdram dimms VGA
etc) without anything frying. I want to learn from the experience and
i can't afford to just upgrade. Bought the above CPU cos i thought it
was my one one had fried - but now think it's the mobo. I need to
understand this stuff so that when I see mobos on ebay I can know which
components work together and which won't.

Apologies if any of the above is stupid as i'm a newbie compared to
many out there. thanks in anticipation.

The 815P chipset on your board is not bad as chipsets go.
The one weakness of the last of the S370 chipsets, was the
maximum amount of RAM they would support. But as you've
already been dealing with that, finding another 815P
motherboard should not present a problem you haven't
already faced.

The benefits of the chipset are - up to AGP 4X support, use
of a hub bus to connect Northbridge to Southbridge (rather
than using the PCI bus, the way previous chipsets did). If
the transfer speed limit of the IDE connectors bothers
you (some are limited to ATA/66), you can get a Promise
Ultra133 TX2 IDE card and put it in a PCI slot. The Promise
card would also allow you to buy an IDE disk that is larger
than 137GB and connect that to your computer.

You can search for motherboards here. Select S370 and
then select your chipset and see what pops up. Due to
the age of your processor, the new motherboard will likely
be used and from Ebay. New retail product, at least from
the high volume manufacturers, is not likely to still be
available.

An Asus TUSL2-C would be an example of an 815EP board.

paul thanks very much for responding. But I need to go bigger and
better than my last setup so 526 mb ram will no longer suffice (!).
Ideally I would like to up that to 1gb. In which case which is the
fastest/bestest chipset that the above processor could handle? I know
i'm limited by ebay sales however. many thanks jackie
