Upgrading motherboard along with cpu.

I want to change my motherboard & cpu to a better one. I currently have a
AMD Athlon(tm) Processor x86 Family 6 Model 4 Stepping 2. speed. 1101 MHz.
1.10 GHz, 128 Mb.

Motherboard:MSI K9N Platinum
&
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ AM2

But would I be able to keep my hardrive that I recently purchase is a 250gb
Seagate ATA. I am looking forward to Watch TV programming (broadcast, cable,
or satellite) on my computer. Edit digital home movies. & burn them into DVD.
Also I would be a doing playing 3d games. Do you guys think these the
motherboard & hardrive can handle it. But would the AMD Athlon 64 X2 be
compatible with new software because I read an article…:

“Today's PC's use a 64-bit architecture. While 64-bit hardware, meaning the
processor and motherboard, are mature and proven components, the full benefit
of 64-bit cannot be realized without an operating system that supports it and
with applications that use it. The software is still very much a 32-bit
world. Windows XP 64-Bit Edition is available, but in general the software
has a long way to go before it's ready. A computer that uses Windows XP
64-Bit Edition must use hardware drivers that are 64-bit as well. This is bad
because the 64-bit version of the drivers probably will not come in the
retail box and may be difficult to find. They will certainly be less proven
than their 32-bit counterparts. Applications that are 32-bit should, in
theory, work under Windows XP 64-Bit Edition. But in practice this is not
always so, especially with low level utilities like anti-virus programs. And
performance of 32-bit software that does run under Windows XP 64-Bit Edition
is the same as when it runs under Windows XP. For now, the best approach in
terms of avoiding problems is to stick with all 32-bit software, including
the operating system and drivers. It will all run fine on 64-bit hardware and
will benefit from the faster hardware.â€
