upgrading memory...?

I was wondering... seems I read this somewhere... when adding a second
memory stick, they should both be the same size, ie. 256-256, 512-512, not
256-512 etc... is this true? does it really matter?
 
Some of the older socket 370 boards you could mismatch the size of the
card,but on newer boards,the frequency,size,must be the same.It matters,
the system wont start or run with mismatched.
 
memory dose work betterin matching pairs put as long as you are not mixing
ddr ram with old sdram youll be ok just have an odd amount of ram on board
rember same type most important
