Upgrading... how to safely copy HD

Hello to all and thanks in advance for the help on this.

I have a small Dell GX-120 and I'd like to upgrade to a Dell Dual PIII,
1.7ghz. for my video editing work. I'm running W2K-SP4 in the smaller
Dell now and the Dual comes (it's used) with W2K already installed but
otherwise wiped clean of all files (not sure if it's SP4 updated).

How can I copy the entire contents of the smaller Dell to the faster
Dell so I do not have to reinstall all the programs in the second
machine?

I have been told Norton Ghost will do this. Can any recommend this and
how well does it work?

Thanks!

You can use Acronis True Image or Ghost to clone the old drive to a new
system. You would need to update chipset and other hw drivers on your new
Dell after doning so, Do not rely on winupdate default drivers.

Cloning might not work and doing a Windows repair job might
be problematical since the new machine is multi-processor
equipped. It might be better just to save and backup the
original files and re-install all of the applications to the
new system.

Hmm, I've never heard of a 1.7 GHz. P-III. Intel has a Processor
Identification program, you might wanna use it.

Here's what you do to transfer your old system intact to your new system
First backup everything on your existing P-III just to CYA.

With Windows running on your old system, insert your Win2K CD.
Follow the prompts to "Upgrade" your existing installation.
At the first reboot, power down the system.

By whatever means available to you, Ghost your partially upgraded old disk
to your new Dual P-III hard disk.

Boot your new dual P-III.
Continue the "Upgrade" on your new computer.

Its as simple as that. I've done this dozens of times with complete success.
Although it seems as though they should be almost identical, I've had much
more success with this method than with the "In Place Upgrade" method.

Good luck to you.

Thanks for the reply. I have not actually purchased this dual unit as yet and I
assume you mean it is a P4 and not a P3 if it is running at 1.7ghz. Understood.

I'm wondering if you or someone else can explain exactly what this is doing
before I attempt it? I'm just a bit nervous about doing anything to the original
drive.

Thanks!

The free XXCLONE works well for creating bootable file clones of one
drive or partition to another. The new drive (destination) will have
all files removed that do not exist on the old drive (source). From
what you wrote, I think that's what you want to do.

Temporarily, remove the new drive and connect it to the old machine.
Be careful of the jumper setting on the new drive. If you connect it
as a slave, you'll have to set the jumper accordingly. You can connect
it as a secondary master using a secondary drive cable, in which case
it would remain jumpered as a master.

I use XXCLONE quite a bit, and it has always worked perfectly for me.
