Upgrading HAL with out Reinstall

We have a large install base, and use GHOST to image our PCs. With new PCs
coming in having dual core processors, is there a way to get the OS to
recognize the 2nd processor with out going through a reinstall/repair and
manually changing the HAL?

thanks.

No, if you think about it duel core processors use different motherboard
chipsets and that is at the heart of Windows. At the very least you will
have to do a repair install. I'd be very surprised if someone has worked out
a way other than a repair install or reformat + reinstall. I know some say
you can go into device manager and remove the drivers, shut down. Replace
motherboard........ start Windows. Windows will ask for the Windows CD (or
motherboard driver CD) and install the needed new drivers. I don't think
this would work very well and if it did it wouldn't be stable. A repair
install is the best or a reformat and reinstall. Take your pick. Have a go
at removing the drivers and see what happens.

FWIW: I've performed *many* repair installations...and the only one that
did NOT work was when I went
from a single CPU system to a dual CPU machine.

Not saying it can't be done...but I'd backup the data and perform a fresh
installation.

I would take one of the new PC's with a dual core and create an image for all the dual cores. Then
use your original image for single processor machines and the dual core one for new ones you get.

Create a new image for the new hardware platform. (Or perform a repair
installation on each system after you download the image.)
