I recently purchased a laptop that had XP Home w/SP2 already installed. I
want to upgrade to XP Professional, but I am getting a message that says
....newer version exists already.... I've seen lots of posts that suggest
uninstalling SP2 first (or slipstreaming which I don't know anyting about).
How do I uninstall SP2 (name, location, etc.)?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Control Panel, Add/Remove programs. You should find an entry for SP2
in the add/remove list.

Is this a new laptop that came with SP2 pre-installed by the vendor or
did you purchase it from someone who may have applied SP2 after the OS
was installed? If the former SP2 can't be removed, if the latter you
might be able to remove it by looking in Add/Remove programs for an SP2
entry.

If SP2 can't be removed then the choices are to do a clean install with
the Pro version: http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html.
Backup all essential data first, do the clean install, install programs
from their original media and then restore the backup.

The other option is slipstream SP2 with XP Pro to create a new
installation CD. It is a straightforward process. Here are several
links on how to do this:
