I tried to upgrade my computer that came with XP Home to
XP Pro and it just didn't work - various .dll files were
not copied or something like that....I did the press "r"
thing and that didn't fix it. I then tried to do the
system recovery built onto a partitioned drive of the
computer to restore the XP home and got a <windows
root>\system32\hal.dll not found message...anyone have
any suggestions???

HELP!

Hello
What kind of XP Pro cd are you using?(upgrade or full)
Your XP Home is an OEM version therefore you will only be able to do an
upgrade with the upgrade cd, you will need a full version of XP Pro to do a
clean install or a qualifying retail version, restore disks will not work.

If you are using an upgrade version, reinstall your Home version then leave
the computer running and put the upgrade version in and choose upgrade not
full.

If you are using the full version boot from the cd and follow the
instructions.

It may be necessary to set your boot order in the BIOS for the ROM drive to
boot before the HDD.
