Hi, I just purchased a new computer and want to upgrade
from XP Home to XP Pro. Most folks I talk to say that I
need to wipe the HDD and start a fresh (including Sony).
I have bought a full copy of XP Pro. Do I need to format
the disc or can I simply put in the XP Pro CDs and select
upgrade? MS seems to think I can? But everyone else
seems to think otherwise. Are there any folks who have
actually done the upgrade and survived to tell the story?

Thanks
AJ.

Nope, you dont need to format. just start the install process from inside
of Windows XP Home and select upgrade install.

Hi!Aj!
you may do the both.Either simply run the cd and get upgraded or a clean
format.But I prefer a clean installation.

Hi AJ,

Upgrade whenever possible. You can always do a format/clean install if it
doesn't work. You don't get that choice if you go the other way 'round.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with upgrading. Clean installs are done by
those who either a) have a penchant for only doing clean installs, b) don't
know how to care for their system and always wind up having to do so anyways
or c) use clean installs for testing scenarios.

Yes, you can upgrade. It's the easiest and most likely successful
of all upgrades. And the Full version can indeed do an upgrade.

But be careful! Make sure that what you've bought is indeed the
full retail version. Many people confuse the OEM version with the
full version. The OEM version can *not* do an upgrade, only a
clean installation.
