upgrading from WinME to WinXP

I am in the process of upgrading from WindowsME to
WindowsXP Home Edition. I have already uninstalled all
of the programs I had running on WinME. Now I would like
to reformat my hard drive to clean off ME. I have a
startup disk created, but it is not allowing me to format
the c: drive while in DOS. I have access to other
computers that are using XP or Win98SE. What do I need
to do at this point to create a floppy that will allow me
to reformat the c: drive prior to installing XP?

Thank you for your help in advance!

As I recall, the startup diskette that you create with
WinME doesn't include the DOS disk preparation utilities
FDISK and FORMAT. Create a startup diskette with a 98SE
machine, and you'll have what you need.

But before you initialize the hard disk, be sure to backup
your data files, or all of your application information
will be erased.

None of what you are trying to do is necessary for a clean install. I
usually recommend prepping for a clean install, take the option to upgrade.
If the upgrade goes well and it usually does, you will way ahead in the
configuration of XP. If it doesn't, clean install.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.

Greetings --

Boot diskettes are a thing of the past, as all legitimate WinXP
installation CDs are already bootable. (And 3.5" disk drives are also
becoming something of a rarity.)

Simply boot from the WinXP Upgrade CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
