Upgrading from Windows98 to Windows XP Pro

I am trying to upgrade from Windows 98 SE to Windows XP Professional SP2.
When I insert the disk and go to 'Check System Compatability/Check my system
automatically' I get the following message 'Windows XP Setup does not support
upgrading from Microsoft Windows 98 to Microsoft Windows XP Professional.
Setup cannot continue.'
When I run the 'Install Windows XP' the only option I have is 'New
Installation (Advanced)'.
Microsoft's website says I can do this upgrade so what is the problem?
Will the 'New Installation' wipe out all my data and if so how do I reload
my data, especially if I use the NTFS file system?

Thank you.

Bob;
You will get that message when you attempt an upgrade with an OEM version.
OEM are intended for a Clean Installation and are incapable of upgrading.
One of the many reasons you pay less for OEM.

FAST may help save files and settings for a Clean Installation:

Are you using an OEM Installation CD? By design, an OEM CD cannot be
used to perform an upgrade of an earlier OS, as it was designed to be
installed _only_ upon an empty hard drive.
