My laptop (SONY PCG-TR2A) came with Windows XP Home
Edition. However due to requirements in my work, I will
have to upgrade to Windows XP Pro. Is this possible? Is
there a specific upgrade product that I will have to
purchase? What will happen to software and drivers
preinstalled by manufacturer?

Thank You

Buy the XP Pro Upgrade. Insert the CD in your drive and do a upgrade. I
strongly suggest that you review information about upgrading your laptop at
Sony's website before you do the upgrade. They have specific instructions
about the preinstalled software and drivers. Carefully follow the
instructions, and you should not have problems.

Double-check those work requirements. It is very likely that Win XP Home
will run just fine. In the event that you truly *do* need to upgrade, see if
your employer has a volume license, and this may allow the employer to
upgrade you. If not, the Upgrade version of Win XP Pro will work just
fine.Nothing will happen to your settings, files, software applications or
drivers. You are simply upgrading Windows XP over itself. It is, however,
always recommended that before any operating system upgrade or re-install
that you make a backup of all your files. This is a good practice on a
regular basis anyway.

The regular XP Pro Upgrade CD, run from the existing Home system, is the
only means available, unless Sony have an upgrade option (I don't
*think* they do). With laptops you usually need to check in case they
have proprietary hardware elements needing special handling - but in
that respect Sony is usually good. But check with them. It may
invalidate your warranty
