For the average user, a non-technical user, there is absolutely no value
in upgrading at all. Wast of time. Win 7 is Vista regurgitated so it is
pointless to kiss off a whole weekend putzing with the thing to do Win 7.

If you bought a machine with Vista, run Vista.

Technical people, different story. Run Win 7 to find out it is the same
POS.

You just have no idea how a computer works. Best you stay away from
computers. Try Etch-A-Sketch.

For your information, I'm pretty good than average on knowledge of an
computer. Besides, isn't this forum here to help and not criticize people?

That's what I don't understand. First I don't have any backups cause I
don't have a dvd burner on the laptop just a cd burner and it would take a
crap load of cds to backup my c and d drive. Second if I had a backup of my
drives, it has vista on it so how could a i run a backup for my user data
for win 7with vista data on it?
Debbie

How big is the amount of data? If it is small like Word or Open Office
files, buy a USB stick and use it to back them up.

There are also USB drives out there that are big enough to hold 50 or
more full length movies... Great for backups.

If you have a second computer, backup between them.

Very useful when someone says the only way to fix Vista/Win 7 is a F8 or
F11 full recovery...or worse, a disk restore. If the OEM didn't give
your recovery disks, look in the Start menu and make them now.

Wow,

Following this thread is like being interviewed by a CSI group. I'm
almost to afraid add my 2 cents here.

However, Just a thought...
I have heard of and have been thinking of trying an online backup called
Karbonite. There is $55.00 annual fee and your data/programs/complete
system gets backed up automatically. There most probably are other
similar free sites for those of us who for whatever reason,
can't/don't/forget to Backup...

Other than the privacy issue, they have your data and files ----

No it reads CD's and DVD's but only writes CD's

What model is the system? Could be MS Windows didn't recognize it and
is using some silly excuse for a driver.

You just backup the data, not the OS :)

I think MS Windows is the only OS that you can't totally backup and
recover without a fresh install of the kitchen sink, using only the OS
tools. A point which has always irked me about MS stuff.

Microsoft should buy Ghost or somene and put out a 1/2 decent OS
recovery tool.

Someone said to backup just the user data, I have no idea how big that is.
I don't even know what files they are.

I quote from your response to Kevin Smallbone (who BTW is a well known
lunatic in this group - killfile him!):
"For your information, I'm pretty good than average on knowledge of an
computer. "

So you can't be THAT good if you don't know where your User data is.
Most of it will be in your Documents folder, and music will be in your Music
folder, pictures in your Pictures folder and videos in your Videos folder.
Your email data will depend on your Email client, and Favorites (which many
people, even me! sometimes forget) can be backed up by exporting to an HTML
file which is then saved on your external backup media.

I don't know where a lot of folders are in vista like I do XP. I thought
they meant something else. That data is the least of my problems if
installing a clean install of win 7 is going to lose all my programs. I
hardly had anything in my documents folder or any of those other folders.
As I stated, this laptop is my backup so I didn't put anything important in
those folders. What I have is graphic programs that I have installed as a
backup to use for my photos if my pc is down. I dislike Vista so much
that's why I don't use it that often. I do know quite a bit about windows
XP but as far as vista, a lot of the folders aren't in the same place as in
XP. That's why sometimes I need help with it, but I do know most stuff, I'm
not a dummy like some people with pc's. I even built my own pc.
