Upgrading from ME

I'm getting an error message that says Windows XP setup
does not support upgrading from microsoft windows Millenium
to microsoft windows xp home edition....
Does this mean I have to buy the full version instead of
the upgrade?
Any additional help would be appreciated.

What is the exact verbatim error message? This behavior can occur if there
is incompatible hardware or an incompatible device driver on your computer.
