Upgrading from Home to Pro question

W

wingman

I'm currently running XP Home SP2 and considering upgrading to XP Pro SP2.
If I get a full version of XP Pro SP2 will that upgrade my Home version (Vs
getting an "upgrade" version of XP Pro)? Thanks!

Yes, as long as it's a "Retail Version" of Windows XP Pro
and not an "OEM version".

Either one will work. But be sure not to get an OEM version
(which many people confuse with the Full version) since that will
*not* do an upgrade.

However, I have two questions for you:

1. Why would you want to get a Full version instead of an
Upgrade? They contain exactly the same software, and the Full
version costs considerably more. Buying a Full version if you
qualify for an Upgrade is a waste of money.

2. Are you sure you want to upgrade to Professional? Are you
aware that XP Professional and XP Home are exactly the same in
all respects, except that Professional has a few features (mostly
related to networking and security) missing from Home. For most
(but not all) home users, even those with a home network, these
features aren't needed, would never be used, and buying
Professional instead of Home is a waste of money.

The retail full version of XP Pro ("for computers without Windows")
will do the upgrade.

However this version is vastly more expensive than the retail upgrade
version and there is no real reason to spend the extra money, at least
not from the information you have provided.

And as others have said, an OEM version will not do the upgrade.

Good luck

Get ready to laugh!

I have a new PC with an oem XP home...and had a really old 2002 legal XP
Pro CD. When I tried to upgrade, I got some errors [which I didn't record] so
I ended up with a dual install. The XP Pro had none of the PC drivers etc.

I turned my PC over to a friend this week to do a real upgrade and now have
a fiasco.

I can neither boot into the XP Pro or XP Home. my friend 'deleted XP Home'
and then tried to recover it. Of course, I have no backups. Since the PC is
so new, there is not much loss of data, although I would like to save it.

==> Would an expert be able to save my data, given their expertise, or
should I abandon all hope and just do a new install?

I also now know [reading this newsgroup] that I need to acquire a
streamlining version of XP Pro which is probably why my first installed
failed.

Oh, woe is me. I have only myself to kick.

==> What options do I have other than a new clean install?

Thank you, I really am not this dumb normally!

What exactly happens when you try to boot. Do you get an option to select to
boot to XP Home and XP Pro.What error message if any. Did you try to see if
it boots to Safe Mode.Have you tried to boot up with the xp cd. Tried a
System Restore. Post back with some of these answers.

Peter,

Yes I do get the option to select either XP Pro or XP Home. When I select XP
Pro, I get a screen that says that Windows was not start properly. When I
select Safe Mode, I get a list of multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition file names
that zooms by, and then a black screen saying Safe Mode in each of the 4
corners of the screen, "Microsoft Windoes XP (Build 2600)" in the top line,
middle, the mouse works, but that's it. Crt-Alt-Del does not work. [all the
other flavors of safe mode get the same thing. Except Last good config gets
the Windows logo, but then only a black screen; again the mouse works.]

When I select XP Home, I get an error message "windows could not start
because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\system32\config\system. You can ... repair this file by starting
windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Select r to start repair." My
PC did not come with a CD. I have requested this from the mfg, HP.

If I have the XP Home CD from HP, will I recover my system?

Thank you for your time.

Hi Julie,

I also have a HP computer.

What HP is sending you is a set of recovery CD's. Mine takes 8.
When you run the recovery CD's it will wipe everything off of the hard
drive and start over. Your computer will be in the same condition as
the day you bought it. It will install all of the annoying programs
that HP thinks you want. This is the purpose of the "Recovery CD."

From there you will have to do all of the upgrades to the programs and
windows updates.
Sorry I couldn't be more help to you.
